In 2000, the popular and widely read “Tastings” wine columnists for the Wall Street Journal, Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, invented “Open That Bottle Night.”
Why? Because many people have wine that they are saving for a special occasion - that never seems to come. Or a bottle that was a gift from someone dear, or commemorated a special event. Results: the bottle becomes too special to ever open and enjoy.
From their column:
“This is exactly why we invented Open That Bottle Night, a celebration of wine, friends and memories during which all of us finally pull the cork on that bottle and enjoy the aromas, tastes, tears and laughter that always spill forth. Open That Bottle Night (OTBN), which takes place on the last Saturday of every February -- around the time we all need a break -- will be celebrated on Feb. 27. You know that bottle of wine you've been keeping around for that special occasion that never arrives…?”
